These two blades are both from standing-decaying grasses. Z. miliaceae is a freshwater grass from low- or zero- salinity parts of the tidal mouth of the Altamaha River. S. alterniflora is from the saltmarsh near the mouth of the Altamaha. The Z. miliacea blades are nearly white, due to absence of melanized fungal material, whereas the opposite is true for S. alterniflora, in which blackened or brown areas are clear indicators of large-scale fungal presence.
