Etymology

The "Steven" is from Grace Marguerite Stephenson, my maternal grandmother. The "Young" (middle name) is from Mary Emma Young, my paternal grandmother. Other names in the family tree leading to me are: Evans, Lee, Hupp, Kreimendahl, Wilkinson, Peckham, Weber, Henry (lots of mixing of backgrounds).

Age, birthplace and that stuff

I'm in my 50s (balding, but no beerbelly). I was born in Cleveland, OH. I grew up in Warren, OH (between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, near Youngstown) (5th in class, Harding High). I married Becky McCranie (Beckyphoto2) in 1966 [NOTE: Becky passed away on 22 Sep 02], and we lived in various and sundry places (including next to the University of Miami football dorm) for many years, before buying our first house in Kendall, FL, in 1976. Mother Nature gave us no kids. With us in our Sears Roebuck from-a-kit house (assembled 1936) on Sapelo lived a little tortoiseshell cat. cat2 Yes, Becky and Steve were young once . B&S2. Here are youthful Becky and Steve with Grampa Evans More images of Becky that I found in her snapshot collection: --1--; --2--; --3--; --4--; --5--; with President Carter; 1964; Everglades trek, 1978 ; T-shirt Lady, 1980s .

In June, 2004, I married Bonnie Sweeney at St. Andrews Beach around the corner from our house on Jekyll Island. Bonnie is a very talented nurse, currently working in the emergency room at Southeast Georgia Health Systems in Brunswick. Bonnie and I met by way of Match.com. We have a daughter, Mary Sweeney (my stepdaughter) who lives in Atlanta and is a student of psychology at Georgia State University.

Education

BSc, University of Miami, FL, 1967, mcl

MSc, University of Miami Institute of Marine Sciences, 1969

PhD, University of Miami School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, 1974, Walton Smith Award

Employment

Only two places: University of Miami School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, 7 years (I thought I'd be there forever, but got hit by a grant-money gap); then to University of Georgia Marine Institute, where I have been for 20 years (I like this work a lot, even tho the pay is not equivalent to that of my peers who are teaching scientists -- to be able to spend most of my work time trying to answer questions about ecosystem function is exceptionally rewarding for a naturalist like me). Those of you who have somewhat low salaries like mine may want to consider raising investment goals; see stockinfo1 or stockinfo2 or stockinfo3. Or review Ken Fisher's stock-selection advice. Go to NBR's Investor Education page for lots of good investing-info links. Or try worldlyinvestor for ADRs. Or IAAC. Maybe even try options trading? Or consider buying bonds? Or bonds2. Or convertibles (not a free service)? Or buy US Government bonds directly? Interested in closed-end funds? Feeling nervy? -- try trading directly with the big ECNs (electronic bid/ask matchmakers).

Sports

I was on the varsity wrestling team in high school, but hurt my neck, and so didn't do any more of that kind of sport after that. I played a lot of volleyball in graduate school at RSMAS -- our teams (including the one that I captained) routinely won the University of Miami intramural competitions. (Other scientifically famous volleyballers of that era include Sonny Gruber of shark- study fame, Bill Odum, Jay Zieman, Bill Rickards, Ron Thresher, Chuck Messing). I gave up volleyball for tennis, and have tried to really stick to my tennis -- I now play somewhere between a 3.5 and 4.0 rating range (inconsistent low A). (Latest results for tennis pros. Tennis on TV from TennisOne.) Here are some tennis links. I buy my tennis gear at Holabird. I am an avid Braves, Dolphins, Dawgs, Hurricanes, Jaguars, Falcons fan. [Need tickets?]
