Standing-decay systems are not limited to coastal marshes.
They probably exist for virtually all vascular plants whose shoot-
parts are not abscised. This includes most grasses. We examined
one freshwater grass (Carex walteriana) of the Okefenokee
Swamp in southern Georgia, and found that it did indeed have an
operative fungal-dominated standing-decay system. Mary Ann Moran
is shown in the image below as she and I and Richard Wicks were
sorting Carex blades from Mizell Prairie into categories of
decomposition. The grass in the background is all C.
walteriana; look at all the brown blades -- it's all standing-
