Standing-decay systems are not limited to coastal marshes. They probably exist for virtually all vascular plants whose shoot- parts are not abscised. This includes most grasses. We examined one freshwater grass (Carex walteriana) of the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia, and found that it did indeed have an operative fungal-dominated standing-decay system. Mary Ann Moran is shown in the image below as she and I and Richard Wicks were sorting Carex blades from Mizell Prairie into categories of decomposition. The grass in the background is all C. walteriana; look at all the brown blades -- it's all standing- decaying stuff! See: Newell SY, MA Moran, R Wicks, RE Hodson. 1995.
