There are Indian artifacts like these patterned pottery shards and spear head buried under Sapelo soils. They occasionally turn up in the dirt used to fill holes in the roads. As I recall, it is believed that Guale Indians spent the warmer months on Sapelo, eating oysters and whelks, and piling the shells into the mounds that still exist on the island.
