As sea level rises, the marsh marches inland.
Here a small group of cedars on a slight rise was
overcome by persistent high salinity due to sea level
rise and years of drought. Cedars are good sentinels
for this process, since their wood is resistant to
decay -- the ones in this image have been dead for
many years. Note at the current landward edge of the
saltmarsh, the pines are slowly succumbing.
