Here is an individual amphipod (Uhlorchestia spartinophila, a large one [about 7 mm long]) that has not been anesthetized. It's wondering if it should blast off. Any little fright will spur these amphipods to leap centimeters away, making them tough to catch and to retain in enclosures that must be opened from time to time.
