When saltmarsh amphipods
(Uhlorchestia spartinophila) feed on standing-decaying
smooth cordgrass, we have observed that if they find ascomata of Phaeosphaeria spartinicola, they will
use their mouthparts to pull out the ascomatal contents and devour them. See
